A survey of 1,047 Australian adults reveals a growing generational divide in attitudes toward retail theft, with younger shoppers more likely to justify actions like stealing, altering prices, or misusing self-checkouts despite acknowledging them as illegal.
While most respondents recognized such acts as unlawful, acceptance varied significantly by age, with younger adults far more tolerant than those 55 and older.
Retail theft rose 27.6% in Victoria and hit a 21-year national high of 595,660 victims, prompting calls for coordinated efforts involving stronger laws, technology, and consistent enforcement.
NSW has already strengthened penalties for assaults on retail workers, and Victoria plans similar legislation by late 2025.
