U.S. deported at least nine migrants to Eswatini under a controversial program, sparking human rights concerns.
A plane carrying at least nine Southeast Asian migrants deported from the U.S. landed in Eswatini on Monday, part of the Trump administration’s third-country deportation program.
The flight stopped in Puerto Rico, Senegal, and Angola.
Eswatini, which has a secret agreement to accept up to 160 deportees, had already detained four men from Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, and Yemen since mid-July without charge or legal access.
The U.S. says the deportees are convicted criminals with final orders, but human rights groups question due process and conditions in receiving countries.
Eswatini confirmed it will accept 11 more deportees in October but did not verify the flight’s arrival.
The U.S. is reportedly paying $5.1 million for the arrangement, and similar deportations have occurred to South Sudan, Rwanda, and Ghana, where some individuals are suing over detention conditions.
