The University of Wollongong’s proposed changes to its Safe and Respectful Communities (SARC) service have raised concerns among students and advocates, who fear moving SARC into an internal complaints division could weaken its independence and trust with survivors.
While UOW says the draft reforms aim to improve support without staff cuts or service reductions and align with national standards, critics say lack of clarity has fueled anxiety.
The Wollongong Undergraduate Student Association launched a “Save SARC” campaign urging student engagement, a rally on October 16, and feedback before the consultation closes on October 28.
The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre supports the campaign, calling SARC essential for student well-being.
