Trump threatened to pull the U.S. out of NATO over defense spending, demanding allies meet 2% GDP target.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg revealed in excerpts from his upcoming memoir that former President Donald Trump threatened to withdraw the U.S. from NATO during his first term, citing excessive U.S. defense spending and demanding European allies increase military budgets to 2% of GDP.
At the 2018 Brussels summit, Trump reportedly told allies, “You need NATO, desperately.
We don’t need NATO,” warning the U.S. would “do our own thing” if they didn’t comply.
The remarks alarmed allies, prompting efforts by leaders including Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Mark Rutte to persuade Trump to stay, particularly after a $33 billion increase in allied defense spending.
Stoltenberg emphasized that U.S. participation is essential to NATO’s credibility, and its absence would have made the alliance’s security guarantees meaningless.
The revelations come amid ongoing tensions between NATO and Russia, with Moscow accusing the alliance of expansionism and stating it is “de facto at war” with Russia.
