Somerset’s new low-cost homes prioritize residents with local ties, excluding newcomers and asylum seekers.
Somerset Council has confirmed new low-cost homes will be reserved for those with a "local connection" to the county, requiring proof of residency, employment, or family ties in Somerset.
With over 12,000 applicants and some families in temporary B&Bs, the council clarified that people moving from elsewhere in the UK or abroad, including refugees and asylum seekers, are not given priority.
Most affordable housing is allocated through the Homefinder Somerset system, though some units go to vulnerable individuals via national programs.
A follow-up meeting on housing is set for October 9.
