A New Zealand wetlands project won an environmental award for reducing farm runoff and improving water quality.
A constructed wetlands project in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty has won the 2025 Environmental Sustainability Project Award from Water New Zealand.
The initiative, part of a national program funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries, converted farmland into wetlands to reduce agricultural runoff, improving water quality by filtering sediment, nutrients, and bacteria before they reach estuaries.
Scientists from Earth Sciences New Zealand, including Drs Chris Tanner and Brandon Goeller, highlighted the project’s success in restoring native habitats, supporting biodiversity, and sequestering carbon.
Collaboration among farmers, iwi, regional councils, researchers, and companies like Baygold enabled the project’s progress, with monitoring showing significant water quality improvements.
The award recognizes the project as a scalable, science-based model for balancing agriculture and environmental protection.
