MG Australia to launch PHEV U9 pickup by mid-2027 to meet new emissions rules.
MG Motor Australia plans to launch a plug-in hybrid version of its MG U9 dual-cab pickup by mid-2027, part of a broader push to meet Australia’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which enforces stricter CO2 limits from 2025 to 2029.
The move follows the introduction of the JAC T9 PHEV in early 2026 and reflects increased investment by SAIC Motors to bring 13 new PHEV and electric models globally.
The U9 PHEV will compete with models like the Ford Ranger PHEV, which emits 66g/km of CO2—well below the diesel version’s 189g/km—potentially leading to the discontinuation of older diesel engines.
Ford has adjusted pricing on several models, citing NVES, though it hasn’t confirmed engine changes.
