Manulife buys 7,325 hectares of Australian timberland for over $100M, marking its first international timber investment.
Manulife Investment Management has acquired four timber plantations totaling 7,325 hectares near Albury and Tumbarumba, Australia, from New Forests for over $100 million.
The assets include 4,816 hectares of radiata pine and two carbon credit projects under Australia’s Carbon Credit Unit program.
The purchase marks the Manulife Forest Climate Fund’s first international timberland investment and expands its Australian holdings to 550,372 hectares.
The deal is part of New Forests’ divestment from its Australia New Zealand Forestry Fund and follows its acquisition of a 50% stake in a New South Wales cattle farm, with the remainder to be acquired within 24 months.
