The International Criminal Court is set to deliver a verdict in the trial of Ali Muhammad Ali Abd al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, a former Janjaweed militia commander accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during Sudan’s Darfur conflict.
Facing 31 charges including murder, rape, and persecution, he denies leading attacks that killed an estimated 300,000 and displaced 2.5 million people.
The trial, which included testimony from 56 witnesses, centers on atrocities committed between 2003 and 2004.
The ICC is also pursuing new warrants related to ongoing violence in Sudan between the military and the Rapid Support Forces, a group with roots in the Janjaweed, which has caused tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement, with millions facing famine.
