Guyana’s new Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father were indicted in U.S. court for allegedly smuggling gold and evading $50M in taxes.
Azruddin Mohamed, Guyana’s newly elected Opposition Leader, and his father Nazar Mohamed have been indicted in a U.S. federal court on charges including wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering related to a scheme to illegally export gold from Guyana between 2017 and 2024.
The indictment alleges they evaded an estimated $50 million in taxes and royalties by reusing customs documents and government seals on empty boxes, shipped to Miami and Dubai, and bribed officials to approve falsified paperwork.
A $5.3 million gold shipment was seized at Miami International Airport in June 2024.
Azruddin also faces an additional charge for allegedly importing a $680,000 Lamborghini into Guyana using a falsified invoice.
Both men could face up to 20 years in prison per count if convicted.
