A Canadian man is on trial for allegedly sharing Hydro-Québec secrets with China, a first under Canada’s Security of Information Act.
A trial has begun in Longueuil, Quebec, for Yuesheng Wang, a former Hydro-Québec employee, charged with economic espionage for allegedly sharing sensitive information with China.
He is the first person in Canada charged under the Security of Information Act for such offenses, following an RCMP investigation launched in August 2022 after a complaint from Hydro-Québec’s security team.
Wang, also facing three Criminal Code charges, maintains the information was not classified and publicly available, and says it is essential he remain in Canada to defend his reputation.
The case marks a significant development in Canada’s national security efforts.
