A $1 million Australian government grant has been awarded to Dr. Jessie Sutherland of the University of Newcastle to study how bisphenols—BPA, BPS, and BPF—leaching from food packaging may affect female fertility, focusing on hormone disruption and egg health. While Australia’s food safety agency, FSANZ, says current exposure levels are low and safe, Dr. Sutherland’s research aims to establish stricter, science-based exposure limits, challenging existing guidelines that are far higher than Europe’s updated standards. The study will assess health risks and inform future regulations.
