Auckland’s rail lines fully reopened after 16 days of upgrades for the 2026 City Rail Link, boosting safety, capacity, and service.
All Auckland rail lines have reopened after a 16-day partial closure for major upgrades ahead of the 2026 City Rail Link opening.
Over 150 workers completed critical infrastructure work, including installing 55 deep piles for a new third platform at Henderson Station and upgrading tracks, drainage, and foundations at stations in South and West Auckland.
The improvements aim to boost safety, reliability, and capacity, with the CRL expected to cut travel times—such as Henderson to Britomart in 35 minutes—and increase train frequency to every four minutes through the city center.
Future work includes temporary single-line running on the Western Line during planned closures in October and December, with ongoing testing and upgrades to signaling and fiber systems.
