Amsterdam launches $2M grant program offering up to $125K to help low-income homeowners build family-friendly ADUs.
A new state-funded program in Amsterdam offers up to $125,000 in grants to income-eligible homeowners to build or convert spaces into accessory dwelling units (ADUs) for aging relatives or caregivers.
Administered by Homes and Community Renewal and managed by Better Community Neighborhoods Inc., the $2 million initiative supports family caregiving and housing stability.
ADUs, which must include kitchens, bathrooms, and sleeping areas, are intended for family use only and cannot be rented.
Applicants must earn at or below 120% of the area median income—$111,480 for a four-person household—and agree to a 10-year compliance period, including living in the home as their primary residence.
The program, enabled by updated local zoning rules, is expected to assist at least 16 families.
Information sessions are available at Amsterdam City Hall.
