With other states expected to reach capacity by 2028 to 2036 and Victoria not projected to hit capacity until 2040, the state is well-positioned to take on additional inmates.
The report highlights that 37% of Australia’s prison population is incarcerated for non-violent offenses, suggesting alternatives like home detention or restitution could reduce costs and improve public safety.
It recommends redirecting $2.6 billion in annual incarceration spending toward crime prevention and longer sentences for violent offenders, while exploring employment opportunities for non-violent inmates to address labor shortages and generate tax revenue.
