Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue is installing Haas Alert to send real-time emergency vehicle alerts, improving safety and response times.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue has started equipping its emergency vehicles with the Haas Alert Safety Cloud system, which sends real-time alerts to smartphones and in-car navigation apps like Apple Maps and Waze when emergency vehicles are approaching or stopped nearby.
The goal is to improve safety by prompting drivers to slow down and move over, reducing collision risks—supported by a 2013 University of Michigan study showing a 90% drop in crash likelihood with early warnings.
In 2023, 198 people died in emergency vehicle-related crashes, with over half being non-emergency occupants.
The system also aims to improve response times by clearing roadways faster.
TVF&R plans to install the technology on more than 80 vehicles by the end of 2026, joining over 4,000 agencies nationwide using the system, which continues to expand to new vehicle platforms.
