Over 20 volunteers from Wadeson Island and surrounding areas planted more than 200 native plants on the Hokitika Riverbank to combat erosion, reduce flooding, and restore habitat for native birds like Īnanga and pūkeko, which have recently been sighted again.
The event, part of the Every Corner Project and backed by Pōkeka Poutini Ngāi Tahu and Air New Zealand, followed prior restoration work funded by DOC.
Organizers plan four similar events monthly, aiming to expand community involvement and improve the site’s ecological resilience.
