Over 2,700 dangerous wild animals, including a rattlesnake, are legally kept in UK homes, raising safety and welfare concerns.
A 2023 survey by Born Free found over 2,700 dangerous wild animals, including lions, tigers, primates, and venomous snakes, are legally kept in private homes across the UK and Northern Ireland under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976, with 37 such animals, including a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, reported in Essex.
The rattlesnake, native to the U.S. and Mexico, is a pit viper with heat-sensing abilities and potent venom, though it typically avoids confrontation.
It can grow up to five feet long and live 15 to 20 years in captivity.
While antivenom is available, the presence of such animals raises safety and welfare concerns, and unlicensed holdings may also exist.
