Oklahoma QB John Mateer will miss the Texas game due to a hand injury, with Michael Hawkins Jr. stepping in and performing well.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is expected to miss the upcoming Red River Showdown against Texas due to a hand injury sustained in a September game against Auburn, according to coach Brent Venables, who said he’s “assuming” Mateer won’t play.
Mateer, who led Oklahoma to a 4-0 start with 1,215 passing yards, six touchdowns, and at least one rushing touchdown in each of his four games, underwent surgery and is recovering.
In his absence, Michael Hawkins Jr. started and performed well in a 44-0 win over Kent State, throwing for 162 yards and three touchdowns and adding a rushing touchdown.
Venables expressed confidence in Hawkins and emphasized the importance of proper healing and team fundamentals over rushing Mateer’s return.
