Nigerian groups demand transparency on $14B fuel subsidy funds or face legal action.
A coalition of civil society groups, led by SERAP, has demanded that Nigeria’s 36 state governors and the FCT minister disclose how they spent an estimated N14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings since mid-2023, warning of legal action if no response is given within seven days.
The group called for detailed public reports on projects funded, their locations, progress, and future plans, emphasizing transparency and accountability.
Despite the funds being intended to benefit vulnerable Nigerians and boost infrastructure, health, and education, SERAP said there has been little visible improvement in basic services and no clear evidence of benefits reaching the public.
The organization cited a Supreme Court ruling affirming the Freedom of Information Act’s applicability to all public institutions and urged oversight by anti-corruption agencies to prevent misuse.
