Nathaniel Scott, battling methamphetamine addiction, broke into a relative’s home in Hamilton, New Zealand, in October 2024, stealing a $15,000 firearms collection including a relic machine gun and 10 semi-automatic pistols, along with 900 rounds of ammunition.
The burglary occurred while the family was away, with the garage door smashed and safes cut free.
Police recovered only one pistol, and the victims, uninsured, reported lasting trauma and fear, especially their children.
Scott, with no prior record but a recent burglary charge, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and two counts of failing to appear, citing cooperation, remorse, and sobriety.
Judge Denise Clark sentenced him to 22 months in prison, ordered $5,500 in reparation, and acknowledged the severe emotional and financial toll on the victims, noting the connection between his addiction and the crime.
