Kaziranga National Park named a newborn elephant calf Mayabini on World Animal Day, honoring singer Zubeen Garg.
On October 4, 2025, Kaziranga National Park in Assam named a newborn female elephant calf Mayabini in honor of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, whose song inspired the name.
The calf, born to longtime park elephant Kuwari, was celebrated on World Animal Day.
Assam’s Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary announced the naming, citing Garg’s environmental legacy.
During a visit, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav praised Kaziranga’s conservation success, including its rhino population exceeding 3,000, and highlighted MP’s relocation of over 70 elephants to Bandhavgarh.
He also expressed interest in wildlife cooperation with Assam.
The return of painted storks, a near-threatened species, to Kaziranga after four years was noted as a positive sign for ecosystem recovery.
