India’s UN peacekeepers in Abyei honored for stabilizing oil-rich, disputed region.
Indian peacekeepers serving with UNISFA in the contested Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan were honored on October 5, 2025, in a ceremony reviewed by Maj. Gen. Robert Yaw Affram, the UN mission’s Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander.
The event recognized the Indian Battalion’s contributions to maintaining stability in the oil-rich, disputed area, which holds special administrative status under the 2004 Abyei Protocol.
India remains the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping, having deployed over 290,000 personnel to more than 50 missions since the 1950s, with over 5,000 currently serving in nine active UN operations.
Nearly 180 Indian peacekeepers have died in service, reflecting their sustained commitment to global peace and security.
