Five people, including a U.S. and Moroccan national, face gold smuggling charges in Ghana after a sting operation; eight others arrested for illegal mining.
On October 5, 2025, a couple and four others appeared in Accra Circuit Court facing charges of unlicensed gold trading and alleged smuggling, following an investigation by the Ghana Gold Board Taskforce.
The suspects, including an American and a Moroccan, allegedly conspired to illegally export gold, with one accused attempting to purchase five kilograms in a sting operation.
All pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.
Separately, on October 2, eight foreign nationals from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and The Gambia were arrested in Ghana’s Bono Region for illegal mining and trading, with authorities seizing cash, gold, and processing materials.
They remain in custody as investigations continue.
