Europe launches New Norcia 3, a 35-meter deep-space antenna in Australia, to boost global space mission support starting 2026.
The European Space Agency has launched a new 35-meter deep-space antenna, "New Norcia 3," at its station in Western Australia, set to begin operations in 2026.
The advanced facility, part of ESA’s Estrack network, features cryogenically cooled components near absolute zero to detect faint signals from distant missions and uses AI to optimize performance.
It will support ESA missions like Juice and BepiColombo, as well as future projects, and enhance cooperation with NASA, JAXA, ISRO, and commercial ventures.
Funded at €62.3 million with €3 million from Australia, the project strengthens trans-Tasman space collaboration and positions Australia as a key player in global deep-space communications.
