Air India Flight AI117 landed safely after its RAT deployed unexpectedly during approach, following a prior 787 crash.
On October 4, 2025, Air India Flight AI117, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner from Amritsar to Birmingham, experienced an unexpected deployment of its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) during final approach, despite all electrical and hydraulic systems functioning normally.
The aircraft landed safely at Birmingham Airport with no injuries.
Air India grounded the plane for inspection, canceling its return flight to Delhi and arranging alternative travel for passengers.
The incident follows the June 12 crash of another Air India 787-8, which killed 260 people, with preliminary findings pointing to fuel control switches being inadvertently turned off.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is still investigating that crash.
The Federation of Indian Pilots has urged a comprehensive review of all Boeing 787 electrical systems in India, citing ongoing safety concerns.
Boeing has not commented on either incident.
