Wisconsin will honor fallen forester Adam Zirbel, killed by lightning, with half-staff flags on October 4.
Wisconsin flags will fly at half-staff on October 4, 2025, to honor Adam Zirbel, a 48-year-old DNR forester and wildland firefighter who died unexpectedly on September 22 while working in the New Fane Trail area.
Governor Tony Evers issued Executive Order #276, citing Zirbel’s 24-year dedication to forest conservation, including reforestation, timber management, and disaster response.
A native of Wisconsin, Zirbel was remembered for mentoring future foresters and serving on state incident teams.
His death, linked to a lightning strike, is the first lightning-related fatality in the state since 2021.
A memorial service is set for October 4 in DeForest and Middleton.
