Uttambhai Nathalal Mehta, founder of the $21.5 billion Torrent Group, is being honored by Gujarat’s Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conferences for building a major industrial empire from a modest start in 1959 with just Rs 25,000.
Born in Banaskantha into poverty and orphaned at two, Mehta overcame early hardships and health challenges, including rare cancer and heart disease, to pioneer India’s indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturing, notably marketing psychiatric medicines in 1968.
He established key institutions like the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre.
In 2024, marking his centenary, his family pledged Rs 5,000 crore over five years to the UNM Foundation for healthcare, education, and social welfare, continuing his legacy of resilience, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.
