A Utah man was charged with starting the 17,700-acre Deer Creek Fire in July 2025 during a fire ban.
Scott Carrier, a San Juan County man, has been charged with multiple misdemeanors, including reckless burning and violating fire restrictions, in connection with the Deer Creek Fire that ignited on July 10, 2025, near La Sal, Utah.
The human-caused blaze burned over 17,700 acres, destroyed 12 structures, prompted evacuations of about 300 people, and cost over $24 million to contain.
Evidence found at the site included a lighter, gas can, and burned materials.
Though Carrier later expressed regret and suggested alternative causes, investigators believe the fire started from an unattended burn pile during a fire restriction period.
The fire was fully contained by August 11 and is the third-largest in Utah’s 2025 wildfire season.
