Trinidad and Tobago opens a permanent artificial limb centre, backed by India, to serve 800 amputees yearly.
Trinidad and Tobago is establishing a permanent artificial limb centre following a 50-day prosthetic fitment camp in Port of Spain, backed by India’s Jaipur Foot Organisation.
The initiative, fulfilling a pledge from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s July visit, includes donations of over 800 lightweight limbs, $75,000 in grants, and $100,000 in machinery.
The camp, already oversubscribed with over 800 registrations, aims to serve 800 amputees annually, many due to diabetes or road injuries, with most regaining mobility and returning to work or school.
The new centre will train local technicians and provide long-term regional support to Caribbean nations.
