Senate confirms Baesler for federal education role; awaits final vote amid shutdown.
The U.S. Senate advanced Kirsten Baesler’s nomination to become assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education with a 51-46 vote on October 3, setting it for a final confirmation vote next week.
Baesler, North Dakota’s state superintendent since 2012 and the nation’s longest-serving chief state school officer since 2024, was nominated in February by Secretary of Education Linda McMahon and endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown beginning October 1, she cannot take office until operations resume.
She plans to resign her state role once confirmed and transition to the federal position, with Governor Kelly Armstrong expected to appoint a temporary replacement.
