John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, announced that its first-ever born pygmy hippo, a male calf named Hugo, was welcomed on September 3, 2025.
The 11-pound baby, offspring of parents Penelope and Jahari, won the public naming contest with the name Hugo, meaning "smart and spirited."
Pygmy hippos, native to West Africa and classified as critically endangered with fewer than 2,500 in the wild, rely on zoo conservation efforts for survival.
The calf and mother are currently behind the scenes for health and safety but are expected to be introduced to the public later in October 2025.
