flag Prince George RCMP cleared in 2024 death of man in custody after investigation found no misconduct.

The Independent Investigations Office in British Columbia has cleared the Prince George RCMP of wrongdoing in the 2024 death of a man in custody. The man, arrested for public intoxication on November 6, became unresponsive in a cell and died of cardiac arrest. Investigators found he was resistant during arrest, including kicking a police vehicle and attacking officers, prompting officers to subdue him by pulling him to the floor, where one officer punched him four times. Video and witness accounts supported the officers’ actions, and the autopsy revealed no injuries from the use of force. The watchdog concluded no officer failed in their duty of care.
