Over 120 killed in surge of bandit attacks across Nigeria’s northwest, displacing hundreds and shutting schools.
A surge in bandit attacks across Nigeria’s northwest has intensified, with recent violence in Plateau, Kwara, and Niger states leaving over 120 dead, more than 80 abducted, and hundreds displaced.
In Plateau State, a fact-finding committee found attackers originate from neighboring states and operate across border regions, linked to extremist groups, with over 420 communities attacked and nearly 12,000 lives lost since the crisis began.
In Kwara’s Oke-Ode, a September 28 attack killed at least 13 and prompted mass evacuation, while Niger’s Magama area saw four killed and nine abducted, including a man who warned of bandits on social media.
The violence, fueled by land disputes, criminality, and political instability, has shut over 180 schools and driven widespread fear, with communities demanding urgent security deployment.
