No criminal charges will be filed in the death of Coalinga police K9 Nitro, whose July 2024 death was deemed "tragic and preventable" by Fresno County DA Lisa Smittcamp.
The dog, a four-year-old half-German Shepherd and half-Belgian Malinois, died after being found lethargic in an outdoor kennel at his handler’s home during a workers’ compensation leave.
While no evidence of misconduct was found, the DA’s office identified critical flaws in the department’s K9 policies, including inadequate heat safety measures, lack of relocation protocols, and insufficient equipment standards.
Recommendations include heat policies for extreme summers, cooling devices, and clearer emergency care guidelines.
Nitro served in the narcotics unit since 2022 and was one of two department K9s.
