Nissan recalls 19,000 2021-2022 Leaf EVs over fire risk from fast charging, no injuries reported.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recalled over 19,000 2021 and 2022 Nissan Leaf models due to a fire risk linked to Level 3 DC fast charging via the CHAdeMO port, which may cause excessive heat buildup in the battery.
Affected vehicles, made in Smyrna, Tennessee, include both 40-kWh and 60-kWh variants.
Nissan will send notices by late October and is developing a free software update to fix the issue, consistent with a prior 2024 recall.
No accidents or injuries have been reported.
The new third-generation Leaf, using NACS charging, is not included.
Owners are advised to stop using fast charging until the fix is applied.
