New Zealand lowers bowel cancer screening age to 58 in parts of North and South Islands starting Oct. 6, 2025.
New Zealand is lowering its free bowel cancer screening age from 60 to 58 for residents in Auckland, Northland, and the South Island, effective October 6, 2025, expanding access to about 122,000 people.
The change, part of a broader effort to align with Australia’s 45-to-74 screening standard, is expected to prevent 771 cases and save 566 lives over 25 years.
A new FIT for Symptomatic test pathway, already active in Waikato and expanding to other regions, will allow people of any age with symptoms to be quickly assessed without a colonoscopy, reducing wait times and freeing up capacity.
The rollout will extend to the rest of the North Island in March 2026, with a $100 million investment in hospital upgrades to support increased screening and colonoscopy capacity.
