New South Wales is distributing naloxone to venues to reverse opioid overdoses, following a spike in fentanyl and nitazene-related hospitalizations.
New South Wales, Australia, is launching a voluntary program to equip pubs, clubs, and music venues with naloxone nasal spray to reverse opioid overdoses, especially in areas with high cocaine use like Sydney.
The initiative follows a September public warning after 10 people were hospitalized from overdoses involving fentanyl and nitazene-contaminated drugs believed to be cocaine.
Naloxone, which temporarily blocks opioid effects without affecting non-users, will be provided with training and support.
The move aligns with international best practices and supports a federal $20 million, four-year program offering free naloxone through pharmacies and treatment centers.
NSW is also continuing a drug-checking trial at music festivals, including Knockout Outdoor, after multiple overdose deaths at such events.
