India launches National Makhana Board to boost Bihar’s makhana production, exports, and farmer support.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced at the Makhana Mahotsav 2025 in Patna that the newly launched National Makhana Board will focus on boosting production, cutting costs, and developing high-yield seeds.
He emphasized mechanization, farmer support, and improved post-harvest practices to strengthen Bihar’s global leadership in makhana, which accounts for 90% of India’s output.
The board, established in September 2025, aims to expand exports, promote value addition, and enhance market access.
Chouhan also highlighted government procurement of pulses at minimum support prices and new educational reforms, including a national exam for agricultural university seats.
