A Houston boys' school now destroys phones on campus, suspends offenders, and expels repeat violators.
A Houston private boys’ school, Western Academy, has adopted a strict new policy: any student caught with a smartphone or electronic device on campus will have it destroyed, face suspension, and be automatically expelled if caught again.
The school, serving grades three through eight, previously confiscated devices but returned them after parent meetings, a practice deemed ineffective.
Headmaster Jason Hebert cited growing concerns over smartphones’ negative impact on boys’ development, including exposure to explicit content and toxic online behavior, following a traumatic incident involving a violent video viewed by a student.
The school, which emphasizes character development, outdoor play, and religious education, charges nearly $28,000 annually but maintains long waitlists, reflecting strong demand despite its stringent rules.
