Ghana's Pharmacy Society urges integration of community pharmacies into national healthcare, NHIA reimbursement, and declares galamsey a public health emergency.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana is urging the government to integrate community pharmacies into the national primary healthcare system and adopt a "Pharmacy First" policy to expand access to care for minor illnesses and chronic diseases.
The call, made during the 2025 Annual General Meeting, includes pushing for NHIA reimbursement of pharmacy services, addressing delays in hiring 1,621 qualified pharmacists, and declaring illegal mining (galamsey) a national public health emergency due to water contamination and threats to local drug production.
The society also supports boosting domestic medicine manufacturing through the 24-hour economy initiative and has adopted “Dr.
(Pharm)” as a professional title for pharmacists with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
La Sociedad de Farmacia de Ghana insta a la integración de las farmacias comunitarias en la atención médica nacional, el reembolso de la NHIA y declara la galamsey una emergencia de salud pública.
