The future of Newcastle’s free outdoor Sculptures at Scratchley exhibition is uncertain after funding failed, ending the 2025 show and threatening its return.
The future of Sculptures at Scratchley, a free outdoor art exhibition in Newcastle that drew over 50,000 visitors across two years, is uncertain after founder Grahame Wilson failed to secure a 2026 business rates grant. The 2025 show was canceled due to financial struggles, and despite personal funding and volunteer efforts saving the 2024 event at a $20,000 deficit, the project’s long-term viability is in doubt. Inspired by Sculptures by the Sea, Wilson launched the exhibition independently after a council rejection, featuring large artworks like the iconic driftwood whale "Bleaching" by Michael Greve, which was acquired by former mayor Jeff McCloy. While the event emphasized public access and community voting, and artworks were collected by local businesses and individuals, ongoing funding challenges may end the series. Wilson remains open to future opportunities interstate but acknowledges the possibility that the exhibition may not return.
