The ELCA elected Rev. Yehiel Curry, its first Black presiding bishop, starting October 1, 2025.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has installed Rev.
Yehiel Curry as its first Black presiding bishop, beginning his six-year term on October 1, 2025, succeeding Rev.
Elizabeth Eaton.
Elected at the Churchwide Assembly in July, Curry, 53, a Chicago native and former Catholic, rose through Shekinah Chapel, a Black-led ELCA congregation, and was ordained in 2009.
His appointment marks a historic step for the predominantly white denomination, which has seen membership drop from 5.3 million in 1988 to 2.7 million today, amid ongoing challenges including theological debates over LGBTQ+ inclusion and declining attendance.
