Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has launched the Curtis & Joan Smith Scholarship at the University of Minnesota’s School of Music, the first initiative from his newly created foundation.
The scholarship supports incoming music students who have participated in Minnesota’s nonprofit community music programs, with priority for those from underserved communities.
Born in Minnesota, Smith established the award to honor his parents, both University of Minnesota alumni, whose education and encouragement shaped his musical journey.
The initiative aims to expand access to music education by connecting community programs with university resources.
The launch coincides with the university’s Homecoming game on October 11, when Smith will perform with the marching band, followed by a luncheon to support the scholarship.
