Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer, after enduring torture and imprisonment, will leave Cuba for exile by October 6, citing persecution and U.S. support.
Cuban opposition leader José Daniel Ferrer, founder of UNPACU, announced he will leave Cuba for exile after enduring what he described as torture, threats to his family, and harsh prison conditions.
In a September 10 letter, he cited renewed persecution following his return to prison in April after a brief release under a 2023 U.S.-Cuba agreement, which ended when President Trump reinstated Cuba on the U.S. terrorism list.
Ferrer, imprisoned since 2003 and again in 2021, said he plans to depart by October 6 under an agreement, praising U.S. support for peaceful dissent while criticizing disunity among dissidents and the European Union’s engagement with Havana.
His departure marks a major blow to Cuba’s fragmented opposition amid a worsening economic crisis and mass emigration.
