Canada's Senate bans spouse travel and language course reimbursements after scrutiny over $22K in claims.
The Canadian Senate has banned reimbursements for senators' spouses attending language courses and imposed a moratorium on covering spouses' travel expenses on official trips, following scrutiny over Quebec Senator Amina Gerba's $22,000 in claims for English training in Vancouver.
The changes, approved by the Senate committee on internal economy, budgets and administration, encourage senators to use free language programs offered by the House of Commons or take courses in the National Capital Region or their home provinces.
While 16 senators used the free courses last year, the Senate did not disclose how many previously traveled for training.
The reforms aim to increase fiscal accountability and transparency in senatorial spending.
