A 96-year-old Bangladeshi language rights activist and poet, Ahmed Rafiq, died on October 3, 2025, after a week on life support.
Ahmed Rafiq, a 96-year-old veteran of Bangladesh’s 1952 Language Movement, poet, and renowned Rabindra scholar, died on October 3, 2025, at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka after being on life support since September 28.
A key activist who faced exile and professional setbacks for his role in the movement, Rafiq later authored over 100 books on literature, language, and history, including works on Tagore, Nazrul, and the 1971 Liberation War.
He received national honors such as the Ekushey Padak and the Tagore Research Institute’s 'Rabindratattacharya' title.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus mourned his passing, calling Rafiq a courageous voice of the Language Movement and a towering figure in Bangla literature and culture, whose legacy will inspire future generations.
