The U.S. Forest Service deployed a large firefighting helicopter to New Hampshire to quickly respond to wildfires fueled by drought and dry conditions.
The U.S. Forest Service has temporarily deployed a large CH-54A Tarhe wildfire helicopter to Lebanon Municipal Airport in New Hampshire to boost rapid response to fires amid severe drought and high fire danger in Vermont and New Hampshire.
The helicopter, capable of carrying 2,000 gallons of water and scooping it mid-flight, can make multiple drops up to 70 miles from its base.
This move comes as dry conditions and accumulated leaf litter increase fire risk, with Vermont already recording 73 wildfires this year across nearly 57 acres.
A statewide debris burning ban is in effect, and officials warn fire risks could rise without rainfall.
Residents are urged to avoid flying drones near active fires.
The helicopter’s presence will continue only as long as the elevated threat persists.
