Two top Virginia prosecutors were fired amid political pressure over the Comey indictment, sparking concerns about DOJ independence.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Virginia is facing turmoil after the firing of two senior prosecutors, Michael Ben-Ary and Maya Song, amid political pressure and controversy over the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.
Ben-Ary, a top national security prosecutor with nearly two decades of service, was dismissed hours after a right-wing activist highlighted his past work under a Biden-era Justice Department official, despite no involvement in the Comey case.
Song was fired after accepting a demotion to avoid complying with political demands to pursue charges against Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
The firings follow the appointment of Lindsey Halligan, a Trump ally with no federal prosecution experience, as interim U.S. attorney, raising concerns about political interference in a historically nonpartisan office.
The Department of Justice has not commented.
