Since 2021, Heidi Carman’s nonprofit, First Responder Therapy Dogs, has certified over 480 therapy dog teams in 46 states, providing emotional support to firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and dispatchers.
Inspired by her dog Kerith’s calming presence after a tragic call, the program offers low-barrier, compassionate care through trained dogs that help reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and encourage emotional expression.
With teams visiting emergency units and disaster sites, the initiative supports mental well-being in a population often reluctant to seek help.
